Maverick shotguns any good?
A co-worker of mine is selling a 12 gauge Maverick shotgun with 2 barrels, 18.5" and 22" (I think), with pistol grip, for $250. Is this a good deal?
I really don't know anything about Mavericks, other than they are an offshoot of Mossberg; their "cheapy" brand, correct? Anybody have any thoughts or experience with Maverick shotguns? |
Re: Maverick shotguns any good?
maverick 88 is very similar to mossberg 500. they work well,
good solid piece. price quoted is fair. |

My first impression when I picked one up was it seemed light--too light, IMO--not one you will shoot alot with buckshot or slugs and ENJOY much...:no_ma: |

But it is a solid gun and will serve its purpose for you. I would hold off though and take that 250 and buy a nice used remington 870, most gun shops will have a used one for that price, or get a BRAND NEW remington Xpress 870 TACTICAL SHOTGUN for 319 here: http://www.proxydust.com/index.php?q...kuaHRtbA%3D%3D |

Re: Maverick shotguns any good?
Yeah, too much for that. I bought my mossberg 500 new w/ 2 barrels for $219. That was about 4 years ago though. If you have any gun shows around you theres always some good deals on 12 gauges.

Some options.
Hi last year Gander Mountain, a major chain, had Remington Express 12Ga. with a 28" barrel for $289.99 and a Remington rebate of $30.00.Remington has had a rebate the last 2 or 3 years around hunting season. Before you get a pistol grip think about it.You get better control with a normal stock.Blue book lists Maverick with one barrel and pistol grip at 98% for $135.00.This would be a used retail price.(Model 88 Field Security).Just my 2 cents;I would buy a Remington.Simple design and easier to field strip also a great action.Shop the sales,it's that time of the year.If you have a Mossberg product I would't sell it but I like the Remington better.Regards,Mike

Re: Maverick shotguns any good?
Big 5 sporting goods has a sale on Mossberg 500s every other week or so. You can usually pick up a 500 with 28 and 18.5" barrels for $249. So I'm thinking your friend is a bit high on his price.
The Maverick is similar to but different than the Mosberg 500. They use the same barrels and furniture, but the trigger group and safety are different. The Maverick uses a Remington style safety instead of a tang safety. |
Re: Maverick shotguns any good?
They are made by Mossberg as a less expensive entry level gun. For about $250 you should be able to buy a Mossberg 500 combo with 2 barrels new or like new used which is a much better gun.

Re: Maverick shotguns any good?
One thing to think about is....private sales(here at least) are private.
No gov. paper trail. That is worth something to me,maybe not $50 but certainly something. I try to buy all my firearms privately, there is no need for the gov. to know what I buy. |
